  1. Ooooo! This has disturbing, dramatic innuendos!

  2. Sounds like the beggar should do a runner quick. Excellent haiku.

not sure I like the image of this buddha-it’s like he’s lying in wait!

There’s play here or I am overthinking it by finding two ways to look at it–literally and figuratively or as a simile. I like that ambiguity A LOT.

  7. kz says:

i agree with the previous comment, the ambiguity is great

  8. Dawn Elliott says:

I found it quite interesting, yet I’m speechless…!

  9. J Cosmo Newbery says:

Very thoughtful, thought provoking. Says a lot in a few words.

  10. WabiSabi says:

Not sure if I wanted to laugh or cry at this image! There’s the ambiguity! Nevertheless, it’s my kind of haiku.

  11. Mary says:

This Buddha does not sound benevolent! Definitely a thought-provoking haiku.

Nice meeting you in Poetry Pantry today!

  12. magicalmysticalteacher says:

What I see is Buddha savoring what the beggar savors, except that Buddha has nothing and the beggar has everything!

The hunger shows loud and clear. A hunger I did not expect. Well crafted.

See, now this time you have disturbed somebody else with your haiku.
Does being disturbed incite deeper thinking
Or is it a distraction of ego
    Ambiguity or
    Mystery
    Cheers!

How can three little lines invoke such visceral resistance? We all like our Buddha to be perfect, don’t we?

  16. Sherry Marr says:

This haiku is absolute perfection, on every level, execution, the statement and the response of the reader. My fave read this morning!!!

  17. poetrydiary says:

I think I’m happy reading this positively.

  18. This can be read in many views, I prefer to read it as Buddha being humble… But I guess it depends on how you see a beggar.

  19. Poet Laundry says:

A might bit ominous perhaps? However so, it’s a great image.

  20. In this is in my opinion the true Buddha present. Buddha licks his lips and that’s enough for him and rejoices the beggar has something to drink. This is the true Buddha image.

  21. Sleepshort says:

    Very provocative. Thanks for this.

  22. What comes to my mind with this is how we offer milk, fruits etc to stone Gods, when real people are hungry. (Some pic I saw on fb). Nice haiku. 🙂

  23. ElizOF says:

Strong image and unexpected .. I like it. 🙂
